Claire Coffee: Why We're Having a Hard Time Deciding on a Baby Name

"My husband doesn't want it to be too cutesy," the Grimm star tells PEOPLE

Claire Coffee has already had a taste of pregnancy: Her Grimm character, Adalind Schade, welcomed a daughter in season 3.

And now that she's pregnant with her first child in real life, the actress jokes that the experience is not much different!

"This morning, when I woke up, I was about to get in the shower and I just saw this knee or something swing across my abdomen, which, for Grimm, is very appropriate and eery, but it's a little weird," Coffee, 34, tells PEOPLE.

"Instead of just little kicks, it feels like a serpent … there's a torso. Is that a hip? Is that a tiny butt? Which body part am I feeling now?"

Coffee — whose pregnancy will be written into the show, a twist that was "too good of an opportunity to pass up," she jokes — is expecting a son with husband Chris Thile in May. While they're looking forward to their baby boy's big arrival, they're cherishing the special time they're already spending together as a family.

"The movement is really fun because I feel like, for my husband and I both, it's fun to check in with him at the end of the night," the mom-to-be explains. "It feels like we actually get to hang out with him a little bit … My husband, who's a musician, has been practicing and it's fun to hear what the baby responds to."

Admittedly, after growing up surrounded by girls, Thile was thrilled to learn that he and Coffee would be welcoming a baby boy.

"I had a feeling that I was having a boy," Coffee says. "I wasn't wanting one or the other, but my husband was very, very hopeful that we were going to have a boy because the idea of a girl terrified him."

She jokes, "The prospect of dating and dealing with boyfriends was just too much for him to handle so he was incredibly relived, which made me excited."

Despite their happiness over joining team blue — "Boys' clothes are super cute, tiny cardigans and bow ties," Coffee says — the couple have yet to agree on a name for their baby on the way. Having already chosen Eugene for a middle name in honor of Coffee's late grandfather, the expectant actress admits they're holding off on finalizing the first name.

"We have a couple that are in the running and then we'll just see. We have, I would say, two or three in the running," she explains. "Mostly, we've been having trouble finding names that we both like that are acceptable with the last name of Thile because my husband doesn't want it to be too cutesy."

The cast and crew of Grimm have done more than just include the pregnancy in the story line: Coffee's friend and costar, Bree Turner, has been happy to share a few of her parenting tips and tricks.

"She's like, 'Don't try and do this all yourself, you can't do this all yourself. You just gotta staff up!' " Coffee shares with a laugh.

Despite Turner's advice, Coffee admits there's still plenty of pregnancy tidbits no one has shared — especially when it comes to her changing body. "You focus on the belly aspect of it because that's what's obvious, but they won't tell you you're going to need several different bras over the course of a pregnancy," she says.

And while she has yet to experience childbirth, she can only imagine what's to come. "Everything that happens surrounding the birth and how your anatomy changes," she muses. "It's so impressive what your body is capable of doing, how your body is capable of changing, the science of it … nobody told me about that."
